5 Great Reasons for Canadians to Work & Travel with IEC

One of the best decisions Jake and I have made together as a couple is to prioritize travelling while we’re young. Travel is a great way to broaden your view of the world, learn about new cultures, and gain confidence while making memories that will last a lifetime! You learn so much about yourself while experiencing a different part of the world and for us personally, we’ve gained many important life skills through travelling that have made us into the people we are today.

There are so many great reasons to travel and in this article we’re highlighting International Experience Canada to share more information on the IEC program! We’ve made some of our best memories and friendships while travelling and we know how many incredible sights and views there are to see in the world. This is why we’re passionate about sharing with Canadian youth work and travel opportunities available to them!

What is the IEC Program?

International Experience Canada is a program that offers youth aged 18 – 35 the opportunity to work and travel abroad. The IEC program facilitates travel and work exchange programs with over 35 countries in the world! IEC enables you to get a permit to work, explore and travel for up to 2 years and more information on how to apply can be found on their website.

Why Should I Choose to Work & Travel Abroad?

There are so many great reasons to choose to work and travel abroad, and we’re here to share our reasons and experience with traveling to relate to all of the opportunities IEC provides Canadian youth! The two of us used to dream about work and travel from Canada and you’ll read more about our passion for adventuring, exploring and travelling as I share 5 great reasons to work and travel.

1. You Can Work Abroad While Earning Money to Fund your Travels

One of the top reasons to choose IEC is that IEC enables you to get a permit to work and travel to the country of your choice! This means that you’ll be making money to fund your adventures in a new country, and in your free time you get to explore. You can spend up to 2 years on a work and travel permit and see so much of the country you’re living and working in.

2. You Gain Valuable International Work Experience

The time you spend travelling in another country is also used to gain valuable international work experience for your resume. By having unique experience in your field working in another country you will be noticed by future employers when they read about your time working abroad. This will definitely look good on your cover letter!

3. You will Broaden your Perspectives of the World & Cultures

This might be our favourite part of travelling – meeting new people! We’ve made connections and friendships with people all over the world while travelling and you never know what kind of new experiences and memories will be created on your adventures. The networking and friendships you’ll make abroad can be so fulfilling and lead to future opportunities!

4. You get to Experience & Explore a new part of the World

One of the best ways to truly get to know another country is to learn about their culture. Living and working in a country abroad will allow you to gain knowledge of different cultures, ways of life, and values. Learning about different cultures while travelling helps broaden your perspective of the world!

5. You can Improve on Languages, Confidence and other Skills

There are so many valuable skills that are improved while travelling, and working abroad can be a great opportunity to work on learning a new language and practicing with locals. You’ll likely improve your confidence and independence while travelling and carry these skills and traits with you into your future.
